The best five novels about friendship

30 July 2014

On July the 30th the world celebrates Friendship Day. This holiday is just another reason to say kind words to a friend, or just keep something silent between the two.

Many classics used to write about friendship, now our contemporaries inherited the helm. At World Day of Friendship PocketBook tried to pick the best books, in which the meaning of friendship, support, camaraderie is most fully revealed.

1. Erich Maria Remarque, Three Comrades

The most fascinating novel about friendship of the XX century. One of the most tragic and poignant novels about human relationships ever. Erich Maria Remarque - the author, whose name speaks for itself. He became a symbol of time for many generations of readers who grew up on his works. The tragedy of the First and Second World Wars, the pain of the "lost generation" in an attempt to create a bit cynical, but still pure world of true friendship and desperate love.

2. Log Mark, King says

In 1926, the Duke of York (later King George VI), childhood stuttering, appealed to the self-taught speech therapist, an emigrant from Australia named Lionel Logue. This visit was the beginning of perhaps one of the most unusual ever told stories about friendship. Unbelievable but true: the person highbrow medical luminaries considered an impostor and a charlatan, managed to get a success, while all others had to acknowledge their complete impotence. A real English story with incredibly subtle humor, an abundance of unusual twists and turns and impregnated feeling of sincere friendship and appreciation.

3. Alexandre Dumas, The Three Musketeers

"The Three Musketeers" - the first book of the famous historical and adventure trilogy by Alexander Dumas and the most famous of his works. This novel is devoted to the exploits of four friends - the Musketeers, who perform great feats of courage in the name of love, honor and glory of France. These heroes straggle against all the intrigues of the powerful Cardinal, save queen's honor, without demanding anything in return. Their souls are open to love and feats and they win, because nothing can resist this real men friendship and the motto "one for all and all for one."

4. Khaled Hosseini, The Kite Runner

A stunning debut novel, which has already been called the main novel of the new century, and its author - a living classic. "The Kite Runner" - a soulful story about friendship and loyalty, betrayal and redemption. There was a gap between Amir and Hassan. One belonged to the aristocracy, the other - a despised minority. One’s father was beautiful and famous, the other’s - chrome and miserable. Everyone saw Hassan’s cleft lip and all the ugly scars of Amir were hidden deep inside. Yet, it was impossible to find people closer than the two boys. Their story unfolds against the backdrop of Kabul idyll, which will soon be replaced by the terrible storms. Boys - like two kites caught by storm and swept into different directions. Each has their own destiny, their tragedy, but they, like in childhood, are bound by strong ties.

5. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince

The most famous work of Antoine de Saint-Exupery with his own drawings. The wise and, probably, most "human" tale tells about the most important: the friendship and love, duty and loyalty, beauty and intolerance for evil. "We all come from childhood" - recalls the great Frenchman and introduces us to the most mysterious and touching hero of world literature.

We hope that these books will help you understand better all the nuances and intricacies of such a complex feeling as friendship. Read, enjoy, discover the new and remember that one day just another good book can become the closest friend of yours.
